Kakobuy Shipping Cost: Actual vs Volumetric Weight
Shipping can be priced from the scale weight or a calculated volumetric weight. The chargeable weight commonly uses whichever figure is higher, subject to the selected carrier and route.
Actual, volumetric and chargeable weight
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Actual weight | The parcel’s measured weight on a scale, including packaging. |
| Volumetric weight | A weight equivalent calculated from length × width × height ÷ a route-specific divisor. |
| Chargeable weight | The weight used for pricing; carriers commonly compare actual and volumetric weight and use the larger value. |
Example calculation
Assume a packed box measures 50 × 40 × 30 cm and weighs 6 kg. With an illustrative divisor of 5,000, volumetric weight is 50 × 40 × 30 ÷ 5,000 = 12 kg. If that route bills the larger value, the estimate would use 12 kg rather than 6 kg.
The divisor above is an example, not a universal Kakobuy rate. DHL states that its Express volumetric calculation commonly uses a 5,000 divisor, while UPS documentation also shows that factors vary by market and service. Check the exact route before deciding.
Why estimates change after packing
- The warehouse measurement includes the final carton and protective material.
- Shoes, hats and padded items can add volume without much scale weight.
- Dimensions may be rounded according to carrier rules.
- Routes can have minimum weights, restricted-item rules or handling surcharges.
- Removing or folding packaging can alter dimensions but may increase product risk.
Questions to answer before shipping
- What are the packed length, width, height and scale weight?
- Which carrier and service will be used?
- What divisor and rounding rule apply to this route?
- Is the quote based on estimated or measured dimensions?
- Are insurance, taxes, handling and remote-area charges included?
- Does changing packaging affect return options or product protection?
How to compare routes
Compare the total quoted price, chargeable weight, estimated transit range, tracking, restrictions and claims process. A lower headline rate is not necessarily cheaper if it excludes a likely surcharge or applies a different measurement rule.
Avoid false precision
A spreadsheet price or calculator result is an estimate until the final packed parcel and route rules are known. Record the measurement date and currency, and do not present an old estimate as a current fixed cost.

Frequently asked questions
What is volumetric weight?
It is a weight equivalent calculated from package dimensions and a carrier-specific divisor.
Why can a light parcel cost more?
A bulky parcel occupies more transport space, so its volumetric weight can exceed its scale weight.
Is one divisor used for every route?
No. Divisors and rounding rules vary by carrier, service, market and route.
